The two-day Congress included breakout sessions with expert panels.

The SDSN and SDG Academy continued to build momentum toward the world’s first online global knowledge repository of Open Education Resources. The 3rd UNESCO OER Congress was held in Dubai, UAE, from November 19-20, hosted by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF), an organization founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

SDSN President, Jeffrey Sachs, delivered the keynote on Transforming Learning: The Digital Education Paradigm. SDG Academy Director Patrick Paul Walsh chaired panels on the Harnessing OER and Generative AI for Digital Inclusion and UNESCO/SDSN OER Overlay Repository. Additionally, Professor Walsh spoke on Partnerships: Public Sector, Private Sector and Libraries at a panel on Strategies to Meet Emerging Challenges.

Background:

The SDSN and UNESCO co-chair a Joint Partnership committee to support capacity building and policy development in the framework of the UNESCO Recommendation on OER 2019. Open Education Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials licensed for open and free use by the end user.

Since the Transforming Education Summit in 2022, UNESCO, and the SDSN partnered with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions to launch a position paper at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The paper, “The Contribution of Libraries to Education for Sustainable Development: A Global Knowledge Commons for Sustainable Development” combines expert interviews, literature analysis, case studies, and network analysis to provide key recommendations to policymakers.
